Michael Allen Harrison believes in the power of music to soothe and inspire, to enliven and bring people of all ages together, and to foster creativity in future generations. Guided by that belief, he founded The Snowman Foundation in 1999 to support and promote music education among young people.
This non-profit organization has raised more than $1 million to support music programs in schools and youth organizations in the Portland area. A vast majority of that money is funneled directly into these programs. To date, The Snowman Foundation has donated 18 grand pianos to schools, centers for at-risk youth and the Portland Youth Philharmonic. They have also paid for the restoration of band instruments at several middle schools and an aging grand piano at a high school. These accomplishments are especially noteworthy considering the recent cuts to school arts funding in Oregon.
One of the primary sources of fundraising for The Snowman Foundation is the "Ten Grands" concert, a one-of-a-kind event which takes place in spring. A total of ten pianos and ten pianists fill the stage at Portland's Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Soon after, the auditorium fills with the music of these magnificent instruments, thrilling audiences with their majesty. To learn more or pledge your support, visit www.snowmanfoundation.org.
Michael's philanthropic efforts extend beyond the scope of his foundation. He has produced more 20 benefit CDs to support charities like the Children's Cancer Association.
